Mabel Lido ("Estella") - Mezzo Soprano

Praised by the New York Times for her "warm, expressive mezzo-soprano" and the Houston Chronicle for a "rich, beautifully focused sound," Mabel Ledo's engagements in the 2009-10 season and beyond include Maddalena in Rigoletto with the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Estella in the world premiere of Don Davis' Rio de Sangre with Milwaukee's Florentine Opera, and de Falla's El amor brujo and excerpts of Carmen with the Miami Symphony Orchestra. Last season, she sang her first performances of Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera with Opera de Oviedo, both Giulietta and Voix de la Mer in Les contes d'Hoffmann at the Festival de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and the title role of Carmen with Metro Lyric Opera in New Jersey. She also recently made her Avery Fisher Hall debut as Hua Qui in Leoni's Oracolo at which she "unleashed a voluminous, firmly-placed mezzo that made one long to hear more of her" (Opera News).
A sought-after interpreter of zarzuela, she recently performanced the leading role of Ascensión in La del Manojo de Rosas with Teatro Nuevo Mexico in the work's American premiere. She has also sung Mari Pepa in La Revoltsa, Aurora in Doña Francisquita, and the title role in the Cuban zarzuela Rosa la China with Sociedad Pro-Arte Gratelli and La Cantora in La Verbena de la Paloma with Amigos de la Zarzuela.
On the concert stage, she recently sang de Falla's El Amor Brujo at the Miami Beach World Music Festival. Her oratorio repertoire also encompasses Bach's Magnificat, Caldara's Stabat Mater, Haydn's Requiem, Mozart's Vesperae Solemnes, and Handel's Messiah. She is an alumnus of the prestigious New Work School for the Arts and continued her studies at the Academy of Vocal Arts where her performances included Maffio Orsini in Lucrezia Borgia.
